Understand the conversion
A board foot corresponds to 144 cubic inches, or one-twelfth of a cubic foot. The conversion is geometry; it does not depend on species. A density is still required to turn that volume into a mass. Two materials can share a volume tally and have different weights.
The board-foot tool uses the entered value as actual solid-volume equivalent. Before copying a tally from a purchase document, confirm its measurement rules. Rough, nominal or commercial conventions must not be silently substituted for measured physical volume.
Worked example with a visible assumption
An illustrative 120 board feet of actual volume equals 10 cubic feet. At a hypothetical 45 lb/ft³, the estimated lumber mass is 450 lb. A separately documented 35 lb of packaging would make a 485 lb estimated gross figure. Neither number is a certified scale weight.
The density and packaging values have different evidence sources and should remain separate fields. If the tally increases by 10%, lumber weight also increases by 10% with density held fixed; packaging may not increase in the same proportion.
Avoid the common double count
If a tally already represents all pieces, do not multiply it by the piece count again. Conversely, a per-piece board-foot result needs the count before it becomes a pack total. Give each line a label such as total actual-volume board feet or board feet per piece.
For a mixed set, calculate each group and sum the results. Keep returns, spare pieces and packaging distinct. The most useful result is one that another person can trace to the count sheet rather than merely recognize as a familiar unit.
