Identify the geometry the calculator assumes
The main calculator treats each piece as a uniform solid rectangular prism. A groove, relief channel, hollow, taper or other machining can remove material from that envelope. The result may therefore differ from the physical volume even when the overall width and thickness are correctly measured.
Do not invent a universal deduction percentage for machined products. Request the manufacturer’s net cross-sectional area, mass per length or relevant product information. Keep the exact profile identifier with the request.
Use a product-specific route when available
A documented mass per linear foot can be multiplied by the applicable total length, provided its product and condition basis match the quantity. If a net section is supplied, convert its area and length into compatible volume units before applying density. Verify whether the record already accounts for the profile.
A measured representative piece can be informative, but one sample has limits. Record its actual length and condition, and do not apply a per-piece value to different lengths without a justified uniform-section assumption.
Worked planning scenario
An owner has a drawing showing a rectangular envelope and two underside channels. The project brief includes the drawing reference but no channel dimensions. The useful result is a provisional envelope estimate with the limitation stated, followed by a request for product mass or net section.
The owner should not infer the missing geometry from a marketing photograph. This site keeps the preliminary method visible and gives the supplier a precise question to resolve before the figure becomes part of a shipment record.
