Separate identification from a physical property

A commercial species name identifies a material category but does not establish the mass of a supplied piece. Botanical identification, growth variation, moisture condition and machining can matter to the input you need. The species reference offers sourced example densities. Choosing a preset carries its published condition into the calculation; it does not establish the density of a supplied product.

For a useful request, include the proposed product description and profile, actual section if available, lengths and counts. Ask whether the supplier can provide applicable density, mass per length, per-piece information or a measured packaged weight. Those are different forms of evidence and should not be mixed without interpretation.

Ask a question the supplier can answer

Instead of asking how heavy hardwood is, describe the quantity and intended use of the information. For example: we need a preliminary lumber-only estimate for this length schedule; please identify the density or product-weight basis and expected condition. If the carrier requires a shipment record, say so separately.

Keep assumptions such as added packaging, spare pieces and proposed moisture scenarios visible. The supplier’s response should identify what it covers and what remains unresolved. A commercial response is not a structural or handling approval.

A better material handoff

Attach the calculator record, product reference and any relevant measurements. Review the record before sending and remove information that is not needed. The request form can carry a calculation, but the owner still decides which questions to ask.
